According to the articles by Jane E. Brody and Michael Pollan, what significant changes need to occur in the way Americans are eating today? How can we realize (or create) such changes?
(Post your responses in the comments section below.)
According to both the essays the way that Americans can significally change the way we eat is to realize that if sometimes parents are not involved in a childs eating habits at school then the child is most likely going to go for the food that he/she considers healthy. also i think that Michael Pollan is right when he states that americans eat too fast and depend on cheap food rather than expensive food which is actually more healthier for us. we need to be aware of the outcoming dangers in health because of the vending machines, fridges and the food restaurants that kids love because it is slowly killing our future generation. the way we can realize such changes by looking at our eating habits and the way i think that we can all change this increasing obesity level in this country is by making the famous restaurants to offer more healthier menu choices, make less sugar products available in schools and also the school system should in someway help our children by letting them excercise more and having kids bring their own lunch from home instead of them eating from the school cafeteria and then being tempted to eat unhealthier.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading both essays, they both show a serious health problem---diabesity. It bases on the eating style that Americans have today. As we all see, most of Americans like to eat in fast food restaurant. Because the cheaper price and it could help them to save time. But most fast food are fried, oil, high sugar, high salt. It is very harmful for our body. Unfortunately, parents also like to take their children to fast food restaurant. It causes the increasing numbers of diabesity not only adults but also teenagers. . AS a result, diabesity is like a crisis in an expanding country. And look over the supermarket, so many foods containing HFCS and other artificial addition. And the food products are instead of the nature foods. It not a good issue for us. Because sometime we are not really sure that those food are health for our body as ad said. Stand from those problems, I think the way that Americans are eating could be changed today. That is eating diet and doing exercise. Some good restaurant would provide diet menu, although the price would be expensive. But comparing medical bill, it is worthy. Also, encouraging teenagers to doing exercise, like walking, biking and playing basketball are effective ways to have a healthy life style.
ReplyDeleteWell according to Michael Pollan Americans need to stop worrying about eating healthier and actually sit down and enjoy their food. They should also go to the farmers market instead of the local bodega or supermarket to avoid buying processed foods. According to Jane E. Brody schools and the workplace should enforce healthy eating habits. Remove food dispensers or replace the products in them with healthier foods. She also mentioned how we should exercise more often perhaps 150 minutes a week.
ReplyDeleteI think making these changes can be done just as easy as it is to become "green". If somehow the media would portray eating healthy and doing exercise in a good manner and not by showing us images of buff men and thin women then people, teenagers and young adults in particular, would take it on as a new trend. Therefore (assuming people begin to follow this trend) the risk of heart attack, obesity, diabetes and other health issues would decrease. I also think that fast food restaurants and supermarkets should take the initiative to promote healthier foods in their menus and food selections. I don't think people would mind waiting a couple more minutes for their food (even though this idea defeats the purpose of fast food) or paying a tad bit more if they knew the benefits and overall effect it would have on them and possibly the environment.
According to the articles by Jane E. Brody and Michael Pollan, they both state how Americans have bad living and eating habits which puts many in risk of a heart attack, obesity, diabetes and other health issues. Americans can significally lower there risk of health issues by eating healthier and exercising more often, instead of taking the elevator walking up the stairs and instead of eating a fries eat a fruit. I actually agree with both articles because the reason many people have these type of life style is because its the most convenient many people have tight schedules and it is faster to pass by a fast food which are located almost anywhere you go vs looking for a healty meal that would even also cost about the double the amount.Maybe if schools, parents and national leaders help people see what these types of food are doing to them like many commercials of smoking!
ReplyDeleteAccording to both articles there main idea is that people who live in America aren't really paying attention to how unhealthy they are eating. One example that author Jane E. Brody gives is that Diabetes has not only impacted adults but also children. And many teenagers as well, which can be very harmful to them health wise because of there excessive weight. Another example give by her is the economic structure, food industry and the mass media which some way or another makes you chose fast food rather than eating healthy. That applies in Michael Pollan article where he states that Americans only spend 9.7% of there income on cheap food and is making us fat. He suggest that people buy at farmer's market because it's a healthier way to eat. I agree with the authors on how they say that people do buy cheap food or fast food because here in new york we are always on the run and we eat what we can get our hands on first. I also feel that it's true that eating habits come from our parents on how they teach us what is not healthy to eat and what is.

I agree with what the author said about one always buying cheap food but I guess I understand because people in New York are always on the run and just grab a quick bite on whatever they get there hands on first. What I don't believe is that I don't think we have to go buy at a farmer's market to get fresh food products because we can always get that at the supermarket as well, we just have to know what brand is good and which one's not so good.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the first article by Jane E. Brody I believe that major causes for the people to be diabetics are economic- “an economic structure that makes it cheaper to eat fries than fruits”. Also children eat and drink too much and too often wrong food and beverages. For example, they have twice a week fast food such as french fries, burgers and sugar drinks. To prevent that we have to do few significant changes. More activities should be organized for the kids at schools. That is very important for their life today and future. Kids have to walk, bike and play outside. Many people have to change their diet and way of exercising. At the work places bosses should encourage the workers to use the stairs instead of elevator, to keep vending machines with healthy snacks and sugar-free drinks.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the second article we have to avoid food containing high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).Also to stay away from highly processed food- the one with the most sugar, salt and fat .Instead of spending money on the cheap and low quality food we should rather buy organic food even that is more expensive. The reason for that is that the organic food will satisfied our needs with less quantity and better taste. How to eat is as important as what to eat.
Both authors are addressing the current epidemic that has taken the country by storm: Obesity. Once only common to adults, it has now affected teenagers of America; prompting the name change from adult-onset diabetes to Type-2 diabetes. The situation worsens when a common American family fails to see the threat believes that diabetes is nothing more than sugar. Both authors suggest different ways to combat the epidemic and change the American eating habits.
ReplyDeleteWhile both articles agree that the America fast food chain has made it accessible to everyone, they offer different roads to change. Jane Brody suggests integration of healthy food into lifestyle. Taking stairs instead of elevators, replacement of junk food vending machines to healthful snack, and taking home made food to work or schools. Additionally companies should provide weight loss challenges among their employees.
Michael Pollen’s article suggest seeking healthy food at farmer’s market. He argues that though it may cost more, we will spend less on healthcare. Recognizing what you eat, avoiding foods containing HFCS, and eating in moderations are steps into living a healthy life.

Just recently it has been said that there is a lady in new jersey weighing in at six hundred lbs. Her goal is to reach one thousand lbs. We cannot let this piece of information persuade us into thinking that it is alright to support her. It is absolutely nonsense! Same way goes for the previous essays , both authors suggests that Americans should eat healthy foods. Come on how do the authors expect us to change dramatically our eating habits when all what's out in the media is to consume junk food or " cheap food " as one of the authors put it so bluntly. The media is who to blame , all of the companies that have the massive resources to persuade individuals to consume unhealthy food. In order for the American population to be well aware to change their eating habits will have to start with what we are watching and or listening.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Jane E. Brody we need to take Diabetes seriously as it is the new epidemic. For obese and overweight people we need to start eating low calorie foods, increase activity, and change their personal habits. By exercising at least 150 minutes a week we can reduce diabetes by a good percent.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Michael Pollan we need to avoid foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup which are in high processed foods that have the most sugar and fat. We need to start shopping at the farmers market. Also, we need to start enjoying what we eat because when we eat with anxiety we have a poor digestion and bingeing. We shouldn't be thinking about what foods we should eat but how we eat it.
The main idea of both articles is the eating habits of American people and how bad they are. Now days is more common to see kids overweight than ever. I think it has to do a lot with schools too. If we go to a school lunch period we will see the type of food they give out, which I think is garbage, most of kids will eat it on breakfast time, which remind you, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, since high quality food is so expensive, kids don't have money to buy a healthy n nutritionist meal, so most likely they gonna go to the nearest fast food restaurant around school. Since the eating habits of people now days are so bad, they don't have enough energy in their bodies to go to the gym and workout, remind you, food its like gas to a car, if we put cheap gas in a diesel motor, eventually that car is going to stop working like it suppose to, same way is with our body, the cheap our diet is, the worse, weak n lazy our body is going to feel. I don't think its only matter of family and market, is self consciousness as well. its just matter of open our eyes and look reality.
ReplyDeleteWell what can be said about Diabesity is that we are the cause of our own health issues. In order for us to eat healthier we must stop eating at fast food chains. Now the question is how will we be able to afford quality foods if we stop eating junk food. Especially in this economy it is going to be harder for people to afford quality foods. My guess is that we have to fight for our rights. We must fight for laws that allow quality foods to be sold for cheaper prices. In addition to the creation of food laws, we must also fight for laws that banned or tell fast food chains what should/should not be used.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the first article, it generally described about obesity and diabetes which are developing a bond among adults and childrens because of their unawarness of eating healthier food. This article stated that people are now eating fast food meaning junk food rather than real food. We must have to be aware about health by eating healthier food and we should begin this step with schools and parents. The second article stated six rules for eating wisely. As we know Junk food are available everywhere and they are most cheaper than real food. I don't understand why people don't think that they are saving money by eating junk food but getting diesease and then they are going to physicians and buying medicine which costs more. I want to acknowledge that people must buy healthier food even though they are costly because it will save more money when they don't have to buy medicines. However, health is wealth so we should take care of it.
ReplyDeleteIn both stories they speak about how and what to eat,but in "Diabesity, a crisis in an espanding country" by Jane E. Brody, she talks about how diabetes and being overweight is a growing epidemic n todays society. today society make it cheaper to buy fast food, and expensive to buy healthy food. How diabetes is growing among adults and children, and that it's happening because of their lack of eating healthier food. How the schools pay a big part in this epidimic because they dont educate our children enough on how to eat healthy. That the schools dont offer enough physical activities for the kids to excercise on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteThe second story "Six Rules For Eating Wisely"by michael pollan was quite confusing to me, because everything i was taught is being contridicted. da story saids not to check the labels on the food you eat, not to pay attention to them.he goes on to say that it the amout u eat, but what u eat. He suggests that we buy fruits and vegetables at the farmers market where they fresh, he also saids that the averge american only spends 9.7%of their income on cheaper food that make them fat. I believe that we should invest in buying healthier food regardless of the price, rather than buying cheap food that is going to get us fat and unhealthy. diabetes and being overweight is becoming a big problem in todays society and we have to put a stop to it before it gets out of hand.
Both articles show genuwine concern for the health of American. And emphasize that action need to be taken in order to stop the rise in diabesity and artifical food(Food products). They each in their own way propose that we need to change the way we eat in order to become more healthy people. In the first article title "Diabesity" the author focuses on diabesity and obesity specifically as an epidemic that has become bigger than America itself. She wants people to be aware that it is a pressing issue that has been underminded and if not treated and cause even more serious health issues like an amputated leg that most people over look.
ReplyDeleteIn 'Six Rules to Eatting Wisely' he doesnt focus on one health risk, he zooms in on the what we eat, and how we have now begun to eat food products not food. His six rules tell you to cut out certain things that have become a trend such as cheap food, and high fructose corn syrup. he argues that we ultimately need to go back to eatting real food not the things we mistakenly take for food and we will become healthier beings we are so obssesed with being.
