The philosopher Peter Singer contends that all animals--human and non-human--are equal. What does he mean by "equal"? How does he support his argument? What are your feelings on the subject?

in this essay when peter singer talks about all beings human and non-human being equal he is telling us that being equal doesnt just mean by ethical equalities he talks about feelings and emotions that other beings have even though we dont know it but they do have them and he supports his idea by giving concrete examples of when we want to be satisfied while eating we turn towards animals to satisfy that but what would we think if that happened if it was done to a human we wouldnt like it. i think that he is right in his approach of putting both sides of the story forward and we should consider what kind of suffering a animal goes through when we are satisfying our "appetite"
ReplyDeleteIn the article, "All animals are equal" the author is giving us his thoughts on equal rights of all living things. what Peter Singer is stating is this, "If it can suffer than it should be treated equal". He goes on to prove his point by saying, " Animals are treated like machines that convert fodder into flesh, and any innovation that results in a higher "conversion ratio" is liable to be adopted"(4). If the shoe was on the other foot, we would look at other animals as an opressor, ruler, or conqueror. peter also says, "cruelty is acknowledged only when profitability ceases"(4). when animals are treated bad its cruelty, but when we keep all these cows, pigs, and chickens cooped up in overcrowded pins it's okay because we need food. I think his approach is a great one because he puts his own species(humans) under the scope and shows us how unequal things really are. From color to sex we need to wake up and stop being unequal to life.
ReplyDeleteThe article "All Animals Are Equal" by peter singer was certainly an eye opener. by referring to us as animals , he's being back to the root and the undoubted truth humans are first class animals and life is our right. peter exposes past
ReplyDeleteevents that show the dirty politics and prejudice.
According to author Peter Singer on the article of ' All Animals Are Equal ' , the significance of equal is in fact the principle of the equality of human beings is not a description of an alleged actual equality among humans , it is a prescription of how we should treat humans. One way on how he supports his argument is the difference between men and women. Women have a right to have an abortion while men do not. The basic principle of equality is equality of consideration and equal consideration for different beings may lead to different treatment and different rights. My feelings on the subject of being equal, is simple but yet important and straightforward. It is to abide by the " Golden Rule ".Which states , " treat people the way you want to be treated "
ReplyDeleteThe author says animals and humans are equal. By this he means that animals and humans have feelings and can have an enjoyable life. Also animals and humans are moral creatures. Another reason is that both animals and humans would help their own species before helping another species. The author states, “The distinction between humans and nonhumans is not a sharp division, but rather a continuum along which we move gradually, and with overlaps between the species, from simple capacities for enjoyment and satisfaction, or pain and suffering, to more complex ones.” I agree with the author because animals and people both have emotions. When you give a dog food, he wags his tail to show he is happy. When a person is happy he smiles, which is similar to a dog wagging his tail. They are both showing emotion. I also agree that both people and animals are moral. What makes someone moral are the decisions they make. People make decisions every day to pay instead of steal. Animals also make decisions every day. They decide to share their food with their family instead of keeping it to themselves. For all of these reasons I support author’s point of view.
ReplyDeleteIn the article "All Animals Are Equal" the author Peter Singer talks about treating animals equally. But equally he is not saying that we should let animals vote. But just that we shouldnt allow them to suffer because they really dont have to. And their capacity to suffer is why they should be treated equally, not because they dont have the advanced comprehension of humans. He makes his point by bring into light the mentality of babies and the mentally retarded. These humans have less mental capacity than animals yet they are treated in the same vile manor. They find it inconcieveable to even talk about. Personally I agree with Peter that we should treat animals equally. Why should we allow them to suffer when the inevitably dont have to? They are meat production processes that allow the animals fair treat before they are killed. I am a vegetarian and I personally have cut out meat altogether. It made me feel like I did a small part in stop the cruelty. I cant say that someday I wont eat meat again, but with all that I have seen and heard it wont be happening anytime soon thats for sure.
ReplyDelete“All Animal Are Equal” by Peter Singer, states that human beings and nonhuman animals are equal. According to men rights and women rights are different, he conclusion that “I shall argue, is equality of consideration; and equal consideration for different beings may lead to different treatment and different rights” (2) . I agree with him. And he still responses that “animals are treated like machines that convert fodder into flesh” and the living conditions for animals are very unsuitable and crowded, because meat industries would make profits from animal, because human eat meat for nutrition. That is cruel for animals, because animals also have sentience. And he make his point by exemplifying human infant that positions are similar with animals.
ReplyDeleteall animal are equal by pter singet is trying to say that all animal are equal .. but he says that the living for them is very crowed . push together because the meat make profit for animal and human eat nutrion . meat might look good but in reality when you see the fact that it has it makes you not want to eat it agian .
ReplyDeleteIn the article All Animals Are Equal by peter singer, he argues that all animal should be treaded equal. As he says " i am urging that we extend to other species the basic principle of equiality that most of us recognize should be extended to all members of our own species"(1). I agree with him because animals are living things and they have feelings too, i dont think is fair for them to get treaded less, just because they cant speak to defend them selfs. He supports his argument by comparing us human beings to aminals, we fight because we want equality but animals cant fight because they cant speak, they deserve to get treated equal just like we demand it.
